Read the spread, not the midpoint

Half of these cars sold above the median and half below, and the gap between the tenth and ninetieth percentile is wide. Mileage, condition and how fast you need to be done move a car within that range far more than any single valuation admits.

A buyer quoting you the top of the range is quoting the best car in the set. What you keep also depends on what the sale costs you — a lower offer with free pickup and same-day payment often beats a higher one that needs a trip to a lot.
